Elections are a great moment for our democratic countries. This years’ presidential campaign in the USA, however, will be remembered as one of the worst in terms of quality of the debate, while the election result should be a wake-up call for Europe.

The United States of America are one of the major global powers and the election of is president does not matter only to US citizens but to the whole world due to the impact that US foreign policy can have across the world. For this reason, the President of the United States must be able to understand the complexity of todays’ world, be able to respect its partners and refrain from falling in the trap of populist arguments.

“Unfortunately President-elect Donald Trump has not demonstrated any such qualities and his statements on key issues such as climate change, migration or defence cooperation via NATO mean that it will be more difficult to deal with global challenges through the international system from now on” argues Pietro De Matteis, president of the European Federalist Party.

“During these increasingly challenging times – and even more so after today’s elections – it is crucial for Europe to enable itself to act coherently and independently and be ready to take the lead in tackling global challenges and defending those progressive principles at the heart of the European project”.

“At the same time, a renewed effort in engaging citizens in the political process must be a priority for Europe and must be done as closely to the citizens as possible in order to understand fully their needs and anxieties. Only by doing so the current frustrations vis-à-vis politics can be channelled into a positive process of renewal of our societies rather than unravel into a mere anti-establishment vote” continued Pietro De Matteis.

L’élection de Donald Trump doit être un réveil pour l’Europe

Les élections restent un grand moment pour nos démocraties. Malheureusement, la campagne présidentielle américaine de 2017 a été l’une des pires en termes de qualité du débat, mais son résultat, et l’élection de Donald Trump doit impérativement être un réveil pour l’Europe.

Les États-Unis d’Amérique restent l’une des grandes puissances mondiales et l’élection de son président n’est pas seulement importante pour les citoyens américains, mais pour le monde entier, du fait de l’impact que sa politique étrangère peut avoir à travers le monde. Pour cette raison, le Président des États-Unis doit être capable d’appréhender la complexité du monde d’aujourd’hui, de respecter ses partenaires et s’abstenir de tomber dans le piège des arguments populistes.

“Malheureusement, le président Donald Trump ne dispose visiblement pas de l’ensemble de ces qualités et ses déclarations sur des questions clés comme le changement climatique, les flux migratoires ou la coopération dans les domaines de défense via l’OTAN montrent qu’il sera plus difficile dorénavant de faire face aux défis mondiaux, au travers du système international ” déclare Pietro De Matteis, Président du Parti fédéraliste européen.

« Face aux défis du Monde – et plus encore après l’élection du 8 novembre, il est impératif que l’Europe agisse de manière cohérente et indépendante, et soit prête à prendre collectivement les initiatives qui permettront de relever les défis mondiaux et défendre ces principes qui sont au cœur du projet européen “.

 “Il est urgent d’engager et d’associer pleinement les citoyens dans la définition des politiques européennes, intégrer ainsi pleinement leurs besoins, et répondre à leurs angoisses. C’est seulement de cette manière que les frustrations actuelles concernant la politique pourront être canalisées dans un processus positif, et ne pas se transformer uniquement en un vote anti-establishment“, a poursuivi Pietro De Matteis.
