PRESS RELEASE: Paris attack against freedom and democracy
Today, France and the EU are in mourning. 10 journalists of Charlie Hebdo and 2 policemen were brutally murdered in a terrorist attack by religious fundamentalists in the heart of Paris, the city of Enlightenment. 4 are still between life and death.
The European Federalist Party sends its heartfelt support to the families of the victims and strongly condemns this barbaric atrocity.
Freedom of the press is a fundamental right, and no one should die for daring to express their opinion. “Europeans must stand together to ensure that freedom of expression is respected as there is no DEMOCRACY without freedom of expression” argued Pietro De Matteis, President of the European Federalist Party. Those who are responsible for this act must be held accountable and concrete measures must be taken to protect Europeans. In concrete terms, the EFP proposes enhancing the cooperation between European police forces and intelligence services and the creation of a “European Federal Police” (i.e. a sort of “European FBI“).
“The despicable Paris murders should not stifle freedom of expression nor tolerance. More of both and improved security should be Europe’s answer” pointed out Georgios Kostakos, the EFP vice-President.
